It’s become popular to talk about hustle culture and how you either should or should not participate in it.
I have three jobs and I’m a dad of two girls.
And I love staying busy.
I’m burning the midnight oil working on this newsletter, for example (it’s actually almost midnight). And I am happy to do so.
But there are times when it becomes too much of a good thing.
“Rescue us from evil” also means rescuing us from ourselves.
We put on too much work, too much busy-ness, too much anxiety, too much stress—and all in the name of “good.”
The call by Jesus to pray to ask God to rescue us from evil also includes being able to pray and ask God to swoop in and save you from yourself.
Not that you were indulging in too much “bad” but that something good has turned into something evil in your life.
And I think you can use your imagination to see how else those good things can go evil.
My prayer for today
Our Father, help us—help me—to recognize when I have taken something good to an extreme. And, Spirit, nudge us to call out for rescue when we have taken on more than we can carry. Amen.
Remember
As yourself today: have I taken something meant for good and overindulged or overextended myself and now it has become a burden or something bad for me? Don’t worry about an answer. Just ask. And then pray for God to grant you the wisdom to know how to find the answer, and the solution.
