I have only ever had a handful of interviews. I’m only 30 and have only ever worked some pretty entry level jobs and then moved my way up (or out).
So, when it comes to what to pray leading up to an interview, my response is rooted in The Lord’s Prayer.
“May your name be kept holy.”
To bear a name, in the biblical author’s mind, is to bear their authority and respect. So, when we pray for God’s name to be kept holy…we are praying for ourselves.
And when we are in an interview, we are representing God through our work ethic, the way we work with others, and the way we can help or hinder a team.
An interview is a moment where we can make God’s name mean something.
And, with that, the best advice I have about interviews is to reflect on the wisdom literature of the Bible. Proverbs, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and, my favorite, Job.
The Bible teaches us a lot of universal truths that stand the test of time (laziness does no one any good, don’t expect a lazy fool to work hard for you, manage your finances, etc.)
Carry that wisdom with you into an interview. Don’t be quoting scripture the whole interview, but internalize some of these morals and lessons.
Choose wisdom, choose discretion, choose leadership over what is expected or what you know will simply make a good impression.
My prayer for today
Our Father, give me peace, patience, and grace for myself. Spirit, let my words be your words. Amen.
Remember
Breath prayers can be a great practice for keeping yourself calm and collected if you feel nervous in an interview or leading up to an interview!
