There was a moment yesterday after the Sunday service ended at my church…
…and the prayer team was there, and the invitation went out to receive God’s blessing and come forward in prayer if we needed it.
And I just said, “Jesus, thank you for prayer.”
Prayer has always been the part of my own spiritual journey that feels authentically mine.
I have no control over how worship goes down at my church.
I have no say about the sermon.
I don’t even have control over my interactions with others on Sunday (because these are often dictated by the people there, my schedule for the day, etc.).
However…prayer is something that I can control, or at least control my interactions with prayer. How God responds in my prayers, I obviously have no control over.
And this helps me feel rooted in my own spirituality, my own relationship with Jesus, my own relationship with the community of faithful followers of Jesus.
And it keeps me grounded because, ultimately, prayer is all I have to interact directly with God. That is humbling and sobering.
Prayer is the thread that ties ourselves to others and others to God and God to us.
And I just wanted to say that I am proud of you for investing in prayer.
And I hope you’ll help encourage me in my prayer journey as well.
My prayer for today
Our Father, thank you for the gift of prayer that keeps us rooted in you and grounded in what we can and cannot control. Jesus, thank you for this community of believers. Spirit, help me to feel connected with and to others. Amen.
Remember
Jesus tells us that he is the vine and we are the branches, some grafted on and others naturally occurring. Either way, remember that prayer helps us stay connected and rooted, helps us “abide,” in Jesus.
And remember how proud I am of you for taking this journey in your spirituality seriously.
