First, happy 4th of July for those in the United States!
Second, this holiday always makes me feel…strange…
Because I don’t think Jesus taught that nationalism and Christianity should mix.
However, I also think that Jesus clearly teaches that we should be some of the best citizens in our nations and making changes to make our nation the most good it can be in the world.
Hot takes maybe, I know.
But, it brings up this idea of what it means to “pray for our nation.”
I’ve never known what to do with this concept.
So, today, we are going to keep it short and cut the usual routine.
And allow me to offer a prayer for my nation (the U.S.) and you can choose to follow along, ignore it entirely, or write this particular newsletter off as heresy.
Our Father, today we celebrate the founding of the United States of America. And that comes with a lot of things to be thankful for…and a lot to reflect on and consider what America’s role is in God’s Kingdom. Jesus, help me be the best American citizen I can be while also remaining in alignment with your will and your Kingdom. Spirit, influence our leaders, our people, and those who call this nation “home” but aren’t yet a citizen. Amen.
