“Can you please pray with me"?”
It’s a humbling question. Especially when it is coming from someone you may have been praying for fervently for a long time.
I hear of people who pray for decades that a friend or family member becomes a faithful follower of Jesus.
And, when that moment comes, you best believe there’s a celebration happening.
The question, though, is this: how do I actually pray with someone?
And, I think you already know the answer…but you have been taught or raised in a way that you get all in your head about it.
As always, let’s look at how Jesus prays.
Acknowledge God in praise and worship of how great and wonderful God is
Recognize God as your (and the person you are praying for) father
Pray that God’s will is done and God’s Kingdom come closer because of your work in God’s Spirit
Request for the strength, resources, and wisdom for what you need today
Forgive and ask for forgiveness
Seek wisdom from and to be rescued by God as you move forward in life
The Lord’s Prayer takes maybe a minute to pray.
All of these steps can take you a minute to pray for and with someone…or you could spend hours together.
At the end of the day, it is what the Spirit is doing in and through you. Be sensitive to God’s leading and pray with the knowledge that you aren’t alone, they aren’t alone, and others are praying with and for you as you pray with and for someone else.
My prayer for today
Our Father, help each one of us so we aren’t intimidated by praying with and for someone who is asking for it. And help us celebrate those who we have wanted to pray with for a long time. Amen.
Remember
You can do this because others have gone before you and done it as well. Pull from their strength. And, if you feel the Spirit’s prodding, follow through. You will never regret following the Spirit.
