Just this week, my daughter specially asked me to do her “affirmations” with her before school. A little thing we do to help remind her that she is safe at school and can handle herself and others well.
I am strong. I am brave. I am kind. I am loved.
She normally says that I embarrass her when I do this little ritual with her, but this week I went to leave…and she asked me to do it!
Because it has become a little ritual that makes her feel safe. It gives her some assurance.
And rote prayers do that for us, too.
And making up your own rote prayers is far simpler than you think.
Take my daughter’s affirmations above…
I am strong through the Father.
I am brave in the Spirit.
I am kind because of the grace of Jesus.
I am loved by God.
Amen.
(psssst, this is the direction I am moving with my daughter, introducing her to her own form of rote prayers in smaller chunks she can understand)
Take small truths and break them down.
I am thankful for my comforts in life, having everything I need and some of what I want —> Father, thank you for all I have.
I recognize that not everyone has a job they love and I am so thankful that God led me to this career and I hope I can continue to do well in it —> Father, may the work you have given me bless others as I have been blessed.
It just takes jotting some things down and squeezing out the basic truths that easily remind you to pray.
My prayer for today
Our Father, help us find little ways to talk with you. Jesus, inspire us to jot down little ways we can remind ourselves to pray and know what to pray when the time comes. Amen.
Remember
Come up with one rote prayer that you can start using today. It’ll take 5 minutes to put a breath prayer together (a prayer you can say in one breath).
