I wish there was a magic button to make you remember to pray.
But, honestly, the best we can do is set reminders for ourselves.
That being said, there are some amazing apps out there to help you do exactly this. And you could always sync reminders to your calendar app of choice, too.
All that aside, though, there is one surefire way to start reminding yourself to pray daily: creating triggers.
I’ve mentioned this before, but we are creatures of habit.
And habits can be adapted.
Swap out the trigger, the habit, and the reward and you can make yourself do just about anything.
However, this is a practice and discipline that will require you to create multiple habits to be able to activate throughout your day.
Someday, it might be beneficial for me to hammer all these details out, but for now let’s just use a quick example or two.
Let’s say you want to start praying for every meal, then you need to start practicing just praying for a meal.
Find out what happens from the moment you sit down to the moment that first bite gets in your mouth.
My guess is that there is a specific action that you do every time you start to eat that you don’t even realize.
Maybe you sniff your food.
Maybe you scoot your chair in.
Maybe you poke at your food for a minute.
Whatever that specific action is, start reminding yourself that every time you do that specific thing you will start to pray for your meal.
Just keep constantly reminding yourself to do that and, over time, you’ll start to notice that praying for your meal becomes pretty automatic.
Use that same concept and apply it to 1) starting your day, 2) ending your day, 3) driving off to work, 4) coming home from work, or 5) anything else you want to do!
My prayer for today
Our Father, I know praying constantly and consistently is important…but it’s hard work. Jesus, I need help reminding myself to pray throughout every day. Help me figure out ways I can force myself to be reminded to pray. Spirit, open my eyes to my ticks and habits that can be used to initiate prayer. Amen.
Remember
These don’t have to be big sit-down and crack a Bible open times of prayer. Quick prayer habits and routines are ideal for creating healthy rhythms of prayer in your life!
