I have been on a wonky career path.
I was dedicated to youth ministry, but, long story short, that career got thrown off track during the pandemic.
And now I find myself on a new career path…and one that is completely different from what I expected. Although, I still consider a lot of what I do as ministry.
Then, a friend of mine recently shared about how he is applying for a role at his job that comes with a pay increase, new responsibilities, a step up on the corporate ladder…
…but he said, “I’m just asking God to put me in a position to do more good in the world.”
And I think that’s a great way to focus on your career/work/employment.
Not as a way to climb a ladder or get more money or better perks…but to be able to ask yourself, “How can I better be used for the Kingdom?”
The Lord’s Prayer reminds us to pray for God’s Kingdom to come soon. And that also means praying for our part in the Kingdom.
When you can realize that your job has more weight than just collecting a paycheck (which, let me be crystal clear here, some jobs are just to provide for your family and that is totally okay), then your job starts to become a ministry…or at least a ministry opportunity!
My prayer for today
Our Father, thank you for the work you have given us. Thank you for the ability to meet the needs of my family. Help me to see my work as Kingdom work. Spirit, breathe some fresh life into my work. Amen.
Remember
I feel that this is important to remind people: it’s okay to not have a “career” and to simply have a job that meets your needs, doesn’t make you miserable, and allows you to do some good in the world.
