My grandfather told me something one day that has had a profound impact on my life, “Dylan, you’re lazy.”
And this was a harsh truth.
I knew I was lazy. I didn’t want to work hard.
And I admired my grandfather so much…and hearing that from him broke something in me.
So I stopped being lazy.
But, in order to do that, I had to make sure I could keep myself motivated.
I learned to celebrate small wins.
And then, I had to learn to start praying for small wins.
The Lord’s Prayer includes, “May your [God’s] kingdom come soon.”
And we all have our part to play in the kingdom of God…but if we are dragging our feet, then how can we bring the kingdom into the here and now.
Yes, I believe God can still make things happen…but willing participation is more important than making things happen at the snag of God’s fingers.
We are invited to participate in the coming Kingdom not because of God’s need for us but because God wants us to participate, to build God’s kingdom.
So when we pray for small wins, we pray for God’s kingdom to come quickly.
Today, I wrote this newsletter. And that’s a small win worth praying for and worth celebrating.
What’s your small win going to be?
My prayer for today
Our Father, thank you for all the small wins that stack up to bring the kingdom of God closer. Jesus, help us realize Kingdom work when it’s right in front of us. Spirit, don’t let us be lazy. Amen.
Remember
I’d like to think I’m not lazy anymore, but there are days when I have to pray for a small win to keep me going. To keep me motivated. Ask God to help you accomplish a small win…and then another…and then another…
