One of the dumbest things, in my opinion, growing up was when people would be in relationships and then decide to, “take a break.”
They didn’t break up…but they weren’t exclusive anymore.
And maybe this was just a thing during my teenage years, but it was so tiresome to me.
Either be in it and work through it or don’t be.
To “take a break” from a relationship felt like a cop out for not wanting to work through the hard stuff.
I get that there are times in a relationship to pause an argument or to even step away from the other person for a period of time to collect your thoughts and calm yourself. But that isn’t the same as saying that the entire relationship was effectively on pause.
For what it’s worth, I never “took a break” in a relationship so maybe I’m missing out on something.
At the end of the day, what is lacking in these situations is perseverance.
People don’t like to do hard things, so they avoid it entirely.
But the discipline of prayer isn’t one you walk away from when you decide you don’t want to do hard things.
Prayer is meant for hard things. In fact, The Lord’s Prayer tells us to pray, “don’t let us give in to temptation.”
This means we are meant to pray for perseverance through the worst times…and that we will come out better for persevering through trials and for persevering when it feels difficult to pray.
Don’t try “taking a break” from God…dig in, persevere.
My prayer for today
Our Father, I am so thankful for the times that I have doubled down when prayer felt empty…only for you to show up in amazing ways. Spirit, keep pressing on me and giving me the words to say and things to do when I’m empty. Amen.
Remember
Even if you have to pray, “Our Father, help me pray right now,” that is better than not praying at all! God might surprise you when God comes through.
