I am going to be 100% honest…
…I don’t have a great answer for this question…
I have had two grandfathers die from cancer.
And I prayed for both of them.
As did many, many others.
I’ve read about the way Jesus healed people and wished and prayed for that for those whom I love.
And still watched them suffer.
And I have had people tell me that their suffering and death was all a part of God’s plan.
…and that made me so angry…
But, I think, after many years of prayer and reflection, through the tears and the inward screaming, I feel a peace that goes beyond any understanding…
God calls out to creation…and creation responds.
But God doesn’t force creation to bend to God’s will. God invites and encourages creation to right relationship with God.
So our prayers with God help us align our will with God’s will in calling out to creation. Which means, whether we like it or not, whether we know it or not, praying for healing has more to do with our own hearts than asking God to heal someone.
And our prayers on behalf of those who need healing can act as a comfort, too.
It’s a tough pill to swallow, but one that bears a lot of thought and prayer and reflection.
My prayer for today
Our Father, give us comfort as our loved ones suffer. Jesus, our hearts and minds are open to your healing touch. Spirit, empower us to be comfort, rest, peace, and healing for those you have put in our life. Amen.
Remember
Just because your prayers don’t miraculously heal someone, doesn’t mean they aren’t working. Keep praying. Keeping asking for God’s guiding hand.
