For a period of time in my life, I was encouraged by a business coach to practice gratitude every single day.
My personal practice was to wake up in the mornings and pray about three things I was grateful for.
And, if I am being honest, it made it a lot easier to recognize things throughout my day that were cool and that I was genuinely thankful for.
But…
…I kinda stopped after a month or two.
But, with all of this conversation about gratitude and with Thanksgiving being this week, it just makes sense to give it another shot and to write about it here.
With the caveat that, yes, I am not actually doing this either. YET!
In The Lord’s Prayer Jesus tells us to pray, “Give us today the food we need.”
And while that doesn’t seem to be specifically about gratitude, but it is. Because we are meant to pray for exactly what we need everyday. With the expectation that God will provide for us today and tomorrow and the next day and so on.
You can’t ask for and expect to be provided for day-in and day-out without being thankful for the one providing for you.
So, here is a small way to practice prayers of gratitude everyday.
Choose either evening or morning
Think of three things from that day or the day before (if praying in the morning)
Pray, “Our Father, thank you for ______”
Spend time just praying about those few things or feel free to add more as you spend time reflecting on your day and your life.
Hopefully this helps you make gratitude a daily practice in your prayer life!
My prayer for today
Our Father, thank you for all you do and provide for me. Jesus, be with us as we navigate how to make gratitude and thankfulness a daily part of our lives. Spirit, remind us of what we should be thankful for everyday. Amen.
Remember
Give it a shot and commit to it for at least a week and see if it doesn’t help you find more joy everyday!
