I am not a routine person.
I am not a journaler.
I am, unfortunately, a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants type of person.
But I recognize that you might not be like me.
For some, having a routine is important for things to get done.
And my book, Pray, is all about how The Lord’s Prayer can help you recognize and internalize those natural rhythms in life and let life fuel your prayers.
hopefully that makes sense
There is a great book I read a year or two ago called The 5 AM Club, which I recommend. In it, there was discussion of how to “hack” your habits.
Every habit consists of a trigger, an action, and a reward.
And by substituting one of these three pieces, you can change bad habits to good ones or form new habits entirely.
For example, you may pray in the morning because the act of waking up is your trigger.
You might love the action of journaling but wish that you incorporated prayer more into your process, so you decide to make the action making time to pray with the reward being time spent journaling afterward.
Cracking open a specific Bible, putting on specific music, or having a certain smell (like coffee) around you might be your triggers you can use to start activating prayer as your action.
Play with the format and see where you might be able to start incorporating prayer as a new habit.
My prayer for today
Our Father, may your will be done. May we learn to pray more intentionally and with more frequency. Grant us the inspiration to recognize where and when we can form habits and rhythms of prayer in our lives. Amen.
Remember
Think through your “average” day and find one area where you have a rhythm that could allow you to insert prayer. Try it out for a few days and see what you think! Better yet, ask someone to help you make the best attempt at the habit.
