Checking your heart before prayer
Prayer course-corrects your heart, but some prep work needs to be done.
While there is benefit in prayer being a way to course correct your heart, there is a lot to be said for making sure your heart is in the right place before praying, too.
I can’t count the number of times I have been in an absolute funk, spiritually speaking, and simply diving into prayer has done a lot of good for my soul.
Yet, at the same time, I also know that my heart has not been in a great place…and that has made getting into the right mental/spiritual/emotional space for prayer incredibly difficult.
Shortly after I left ministry, I had moments where I couldn’t even bring myself to pray because my attitude, quite frankly, sucked.
I was all up in my arms because my pride was hurt.
Rather than bring myself before God humbly, I wanted to yell and demand things of God.
And assessing your heart before prayer is just as important as letting the act of prayer adjust your heart along the way.
Knowing and understanding where your heart is at before prayer is an important first step to boosting and improving your spiritual journey through prayer.
My prayer for today
Our Father, help each one of us listen to our own emotions and spirits so that we can better come to your with a humble heart. Amen.
Remember
Before you start your rhythm of prayer, take a quick minute and ask yourself how your heart is doing. Recognizing that you aren’t coming before God with a humble heart means you know exactly where you can be praying for yourself.
